VW Unveils Three-Row Electric Microbus in Huntington Beach

In an exciting move for van enthusiasts seeking a stylish and zero-emission option, Volkswagen has introduced an all-electric version of its classic Microbus. Following the successful debut of its electric minivan in the United States last year, the German automaker showcased a larger, three-row model in Huntington Beach on Friday, with plans to make it available to North American buyers next year.

A New Hero for America

Describing the zero-direct emission ID. Buzz as the spiritual reincarnation of the Microbus, Volkswagen of America President and CEO Pablo Di Si expressed his enthusiasm for the vehicle’s launch, stating that it would become the brand’s hero once again in America. The original Microbus, which Volkswagen ceased production of for the US market in the early 1970s, has been reimagined for the electric future, with various concepts teased over the years and production beginning in 2022.

Specifications and Design

The two-row ID. Buzz, which seats five, is already on sale in Europe and features an 82 kilowatt-hour battery, delivering 201 horsepower. The upcoming US version will have a longer wheelbase, accommodating three rows of seats and seating up to seven passengers. It will be powered by a larger 91 kilowatt-hour battery, producing 282 horsepower.

The design of the ID. Buzz takes inspiration from the original T1 Microbus from the 1950s, which prioritized maximum space within a compact footprint. The electric version maintains a snub-nosed front, made possible by its electric powertrain. Similarly to its gas-powered predecessor, the electric Microbus has a rear-mounted motor, while the batteries are positioned in the floor to optimize space utilization and ensure better handling through a lower vehicle weight.

Interior and Technology

Reflecting the modern era, the interior of the ID. Buzz boasts a high-tech and minimalist design. A 10-inch digital cockpit display sits in front of the driver, complemented by a second 10-inch infotainment system in the center of the dashboard. The infotainment system features touch controls for temperature, HVAC, driver assistance systems, and other functions. The interior is also equipped with eight USB ports strategically placed throughout the cabin and a wireless phone charging tray for the driver’s convenience. Furthermore, ambient lighting with 10 color options illuminates the instrument panel, doors, and storage compartments.

Customization and Colors

The ID. Buzz offers a range of exterior colors, including Cabana Blue, Metro Silver, and Indium Gray, which are new additions for the three-row version. Additionally, customers can choose from two-tone color palettes, such as Energetic Orange, Pomelo Yellow, and Mahi Green.

With its combination of retro-inspired design, spacious interior, and cutting-edge technology, the VW ID. Buzz aims to captivate the hearts of van enthusiasts while embracing the electric future of transportation.
